TL;DR: Universal Audio has replaced the whole Volt line in one go. Six interfaces, two families: Volt Gen 2 (€139 to €279) gets new Tone Shaping preamps, 32-bit converters and a Smart Display; Volt Max (€299 to €499) adds onboard 1176 / LA-2A style compression, talkback and control-room features. All six are now on Soundium.
Introduction
The first Volts were a simple pitch: cheap USB interfaces with a "Vintage" button that borrowed a little 610 colour, and on the 76 models a 1176-flavoured compressor. Gen 2 keeps the idea and rebuilds everything around it.
Every model now records at 32-bit / 192 kHz and works class-compliant on Mac, iPad and iPhone (Windows with the UA ASIO driver). The single Vintage mode becomes a Tone button with three characters: Warmth (tube, 610-inspired), Focus (American solid state) and Shine (British Class-A). Five of the six get a full-colour Smart Display with Auto-Gain and Clip Protection. Only the tiny Volt 1 Gen 2 goes without.
The split that matters is Gen 2 vs Max. Gen 2 is the clean, portable family. Max is the desktop family that compresses on the way in and handles the little studio jobs (talkback, a second headphone feed, a second pair of speakers) that usually need extra boxes.

Key Features & Benefits
- Tone on every preamp. Warmth, Focus or Shine per channel, set before the signal hits the DAW, so demos stop sounding thin.
- 32-bit / 192 kHz conversion. 119 dB dynamic range on the mic inputs across the range, 126 dB on the monitor outputs from Volt 2 Gen 2 up.
- Smart Display with Auto-Gain and Clip Protection. Levels set in seconds, peaks caught, and on Max models the screen also shows gain reduction.
- Max Processing (Max models). Six push-button compressor presets based on the 1176, LA-2A and VCA designs, from "Rap Vocals" to "Jangly Acoustic". 18 combinations with the Tone modes.
- Room to grow. Volt 4 Gen 2 and all Max models add ADAT or S/PDIF optical in (up to 8 more channels), MIDI In/Out and a USB hub.
- Loopback on all six, plus a software bundle with LUNA, UAD 1176, LA-2A, 610, Pure Plate, PolyMAX, Melodyne Essential and more.
Real-World Reactions
"The new Smart Displays on these five models are probably the first thing you'll notice as an obvious design upgrade."

The Line-Up
Volt Gen 2
Universal Audio Volt 1 Gen 2 · €139
One mic/line input with Tone Shaping, a front Hi-Z input for guitar, bus power. The voice-plus-guitar starter. The trade-off: one mic only, no display, no MIDI.
Universal Audio Volt 2 Gen 2 · €199
Two Tone Shaping preamps, two front instrument inputs and the Smart Display with Auto-Gain. The one most home studios should look at first. Note that MIDI moved up the range: the old Volt 2 had it, this one does not.
Universal Audio Volt 4 Gen 2 · €279
12 in / 6 out from two preamps, extra line I/O, ADAT, MIDI and a USB hub, still bus-powered. Buy it if your setup will grow. It has no onboard compression or talkback, which is what Max is for.
Volt Max
Universal Audio Volt 2 Max · €299
Two preamps with Tone and Max compression, talkback, two headphone outs, ADAT, MIDI and hub. Takes over from the Volt 276. One stereo monitor pair, no speaker switching.
Universal Audio Volt 4 Max · €399
Everything in the 2 Max plus Main/Alt speaker switching and extra line I/O, with a 3 A power supply in the box. Takes over from the Volt 476. Still two mic preamps.
Universal Audio Volt 4P Max · €499
The flagship: four identical Tone Shaping preamps, each with Max compression, plus switching, talkback and ADAT to 12 inputs. Takes over from the Volt 476P. Enough for kick, snare and overheads, or a four-host podcast.

Who It's For
Volt 1 or 2 Gen 2 if you record yourself, often away from a desk, and want good tone with minimal setup. Volt 4 Gen 2 if synths, MIDI and future ADAT expansion matter more than onboard effects. Volt 2 or 4 Max if you want takes that already sound compressed and finished, or you record other people. Volt 4P Max if there are more than two mics in the room.
Who should look elsewhere: anyone who wants to track through UAD plug-ins in realtime with Unison preamp modelling. That still needs an Apollo; the Volt processing is fixed to the Tone and Max presets.

Final Thoughts
UA did not just add a model; it redrew the range so the choice is simple. Pick Gen 2 for a clean, portable interface, pick Max if you want the box to do some engineering for you, then pick the channel count. We expect the Volt 2 Gen 2 and Volt 4 Max to be the ones most people land on.
